The Maui County Department of Planning is currently identifying parcels eligible for designation as important agricultural lands (IAL) and invites you to participate in the process. Article XI, section 3, of the Hawaii constitution requires that the State shall conserve and protect agricultural lands, promote diversified agriculture, increase agricultural self-sufficiency and assure the availability of agriculturally suitable lands. Chapter 205‐47(a), HRS states that, “Each county shall identify and map potential (IAL) within its jurisdiction based on the standards and criteria outlined in section 205‐44…”
Project Phases
The County of Maui will be going through a three-phase process leading to the designation of parcels as IAL:
Phase 1. Develop maps that identify eligible parcels based on criteria set forth in Chapter 205‐44, HRS
Phase 2. Establish IAL designation incentives as per Chapter 205‐46, HRS
Phase 3. Through a rigorous public participation process, pursuant to HRS, Chapter 205-47(c), identify which of the eligible parcels are to be recommended for designation as IAL by the Maui County Council to the State Land Use Commission.
The county is currently in Phase 1 of the project, and invites you to participate in the mapping process. There are several ways in which you can participate on this site: commenting directly in an interactive map environment, taking a quick survey regarding the designation process, and/or participate in an interactive online forum.
